When we hear the word sin, we think of biblical terminologies like transgression, iniquity and wrath. So how do we strike a balance between religious ideologies, 21st century recreated fallacies and what God's displeasures are? Is it that we become blinded by victory/wealth inheritance preachings from the pulpit that we disregard the order of the world that "cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy" (St. John 10:10).
Defining Sin:
To know what sin is and when you're doing it, you must first identify it.
Christian hamartiology describes sin as an act of offence against God by despising His people and Christian biblical law. This interpretation may vary in denominations or intrapersonally. Nevertheless, we must admit that it is the opposite of God and Good; whether in thoughts, words, feeling, or behaviour.
This act of missing the mark is often overlooked or walled by complexities of the millennial times. Sin is like that toxic ex that keeps returning when you're in a new relationship with a better 'boothang'. It, in turn, hinders your relationship with God.
Millennial Sheep:
I questioned my mother's perspective of whether the existence of Nephilim (Genesis 6:2-7) was considered sinful. She said, "Yes, because God was displeased". I concur that anything that goes against God's law and righteousness is sinful.
This era has twisted the clear-cut classification of sin to suit an overly sensitive society. We have normalized homosexuality by painting the fallacy that "it's just a disorder" or "let them live their truths", that is a lie from the pit of hell. Premarital sex is still wrong; so Netflix and chill – that gets over chilled (foreplay and beyond) – still operates in the category of fornication. Being best friends with your right hand (masturbation) is still considered a sin. Indulging in blues/blu ray videos (pornography) are addictive pain points of sin. Being prideful versus being lustful is sin.
Paul writes extensively throughout the epistles what is considered as sin and warns us that we ought to resist it. Colossians 3:5-9 (NIV) tells us to,
, "Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry. Because of these, the wrath of God is coming. You used to walk in these ways, in the life you once lived. But now you must also rid yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your lips. Do not lie to each other, since you have taken off your old self with its practices."
Paul continues and makes mention of other sinful acts in:
• Romans 1:28-32 • 1 Corinthians 5:5-13 • 1 Thessalonians 4:1-8
If that does not work for you, let's return to the basics of the ten commandments that were given to Moses in Exodus 20.
'Redemption Draweth Nigh'
In 2 Samuels 11-12, the Bible laments King David walking with God, being obedient to divine instructions and walking in the anointing to rule over Israel. Still, his demise/pain point was embedded in his attractions which he fed attention. His interaction with Bathsheba warranted sin to hinder his relationship with God. However, God's love for us supersedes our sins, so He sent Nathan to David. This destiny helper was set to push David to repentance and realign him through forgiveness and restoration.
It is the same with us, His beloved children. God offers forgiveness to us when we sin. Isaiah pens in chapter 1 verse 18,
"Come now, and let us reason together, saith the Lord: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool."
So do not beat up yourself when you sin. The Redeemer is omnipresent and willing to pardon you. Wash your sins in the fountain filled with blood drawn from Emmanuel's veins.
