Learning to control your temper

Focusing on Proverbs 25 vs. 28...
28 He that hath no rule over his own spirit is like a city that is broken down, and without walls.

Persons struggle with keeping their tempers in check for a number of reasons:
  • They feel that they are always correct
  • They want to let the other person know they are in charge
  • They allow their emotions to control them
  • They lack self- control.
The Bible says such a person is like a city without walls. When you give into your feelings to say how you feel and express yourself how you want to, without first thinking of the consequences, that you may be hurting someone by what you say then you are effectively letting down your guard and exposing yourself to a number of negative things such as:
  1. Regret
  2. Having to withdraw your statement and sometimes in the presence of others
  3. Embarrassment
  4. Psychological and physical injury to others
  5. Pain and suffering for yourself and others

The bible says
"A soft word turneth away wrath...

grievous words stir up anger."

So next time you get angry:
  • Count to 10
  • Excuse yourself and walk away.
  • Pray to God and ask him for the fruit of peace and self- control
  • Think about the situation and what you want to say calm down and give it a day.

You will find that when you review the past in a calm state of mind that what you were getting angry over was no big thing and you will be glad that you kept your mouth shut. For by guarding your mouth and emotion you are guarding your heart and protecting yourself and others from unnecessary hurt.

Remembering always that God is our coach and he can help us manage anger.

¨ The LORD their God will save his people on that day as a shepherd saves his flock. They will sparkle in his land like jewels in a crown.¨ Zechariah 9:16 NIV
